First impressions: The Toyota Hilux GR-S is so much more than just stickers

A legit Raptor-fighter?

So.. another Hilux GR-S, huh?

Yes, yes it is. Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) has now officially launched the updated Hilux GR-S following its sudden reveal at the second leg of the 2023 TGR Vios Cup. It boasts bold new styling and a beefier overall look but this time, with significant mechanical upgrades.

Upgrades? Aren’t these GR-S models all about the stickers?

You’ll still find stickers and Gazoo Racing badging around the truck, but there’s a lot more to this pickup than just aesthetic tweaks. As I mentioned, this gets mechanical upgrades including the improved suspension and the slightly more powerful engine.

Watch now

The Hilux GR-S also has bulkier fenders than before, but those are a result of the wider track underneath. Frankly, I have mixed feelings about the design. It looks angrier and chunkier than before, but the angles on those fenders—especially when I try to look at the truck from the rear—just don’t exactly do it for me.

Okay. Tell us more about that engine.

Under the hood of this thing is the same 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine found in the old Hiluxes, but it’s now capable of 224hp and 550Nm of torque, which now makes it slightly more powerful than even the Ford Ranger Raptor. We were only able to drive the pickup around the open roads of Clark so speed limits didn’t allow us to go flat out with it, but I could already tell that the improved powertrain is a lot punchier than before nonetheless.

Acceleration is smoother, and I’m pretty sure it’ll be even more impressive on the highway. Unfortunately, we weren’t allowed to take the truck to Sacobia River (pretends to be shocked) during our quick test drive, so we’re not sure yet how the added oomph will translate to off-road driving. But the moment we get our hands on this again, we’ll pit it against the Ranger Raptor and see if it can really compete with Ford’s Baja-conquering high-performance truck.

What about that new suspension?

Again, no off-road driving yet, so I can’t say if it’ll have a better outing than the old GR-S outside the asphalt. I do have high expectations, though, because the new GR-S does ride relatively well on properly paved roads.

Going to Clark, we were driving the Hilux Conquest, and I could say that the difference in the suspension setup of those two pickups is night and day. The Hilux GR-S might still feel a bit stiff for those who aren’t used to riding pickups, but for others—especially those who used to regularly drive or ride the non-GR-S Hilux—you’ll immediately feel the difference.

I can’t comment on handling yet either—we basically drove this on straight highways—but I acknowledge that there must be a proper comparison made in the future. This one has softer dampening and a wider track, after all, so there have to be significant changes here. But at least when maneuvering tight spaces, the steering now feels a bit lighter than the Conquest we were driving.

Can it really challenge the Ford Ranger Raptor?

On paper, the new Hilux GR-S makes for a solid Raptor rival. It’s not just the performance aspect, because Toyota’s new truck also undercuts the Ford it competes against. The new Toyota Hilux GR-S stickers for P2,166,000. You’d have to pay an extra P20,000 for the two-tone or the Emotional Red finish.

But as we all know, it’s not always about the spec-sheet. It still remains to be seen how exactly the Hilux GR-S will hold up against the Ranger Raptor. Let’s be honest: That’s quite a tall task. But at the very least, I can say that Toyota truly has something new that will not only shake up both its own lineup and the segment but also try to give the Raptor a run for its money. Ford hasn’t seen a real Raptor fighter.. ever, right? It better keep an eye out for this one.

The RCS and GRS are designed to boost the use of recycled materials.

The Recycled Claim Standard (RCS) and Global Recycled Standard (GRS) set the criteria for third-party certification of recycled materials and chain of custody. The GRS includes a higher (50%) minimum recycled content percentage and additional social and environmental requirements related to processing and chemical use.

Goals

We’re increasing transparency and assurance for recycled fibers.

The RCS and GRS have three main objectives:

Align definitions of “recycled” across different applications.

Verify recycled content in products.

Give brands and consumers a means to make informed buying decisions.

The GRS has additional aims:

Reduce the harmful impact of production on people and the environment.

Provide assurance that products are processed in a more climate-friendly way.

Encourage higher proportions of recycled content in products.

HOW IT WORKS

Tracing recycled inputs from source to store.

Recycled material verification

Materials are verified to meet the ISO definition of “recycled”. Both pre-consumer and post-consumer material is accepted.

Responsible production

GRS sites are required to meet strict social and environmental requirements. Chemicals with harmful potential aren’t allowed to be used on GRS products.

Chain of custody

Certification makes sure the identity of the recycled content is maintained from feedstock to final product. Learn More

Credible certification

A professional, third-party certification body audits each stage in the supply chain.

Confident communication

Products that meet all requirements may be labeled with the RCS or GRS logo.

Stakeholder engagement

The RCS and GRS are managed with the input of producers, suppliers, brands, and retailers from all parts of the globe.

DEVELOPMENT

Catch up on revisions and changes

GRS 4.0 and RCS 2.0 were released on July 1, 2017 after a multi-stakeholder review.

Read the feedback summary

From April 1 to May 31, 2021, we sought open feedback on the current version of the Global Recycled Standard 4.0 and Recycled Claim Standard 2.0.

Read the feedback summary

In July 2021, we began our transition from eight standards to one unified standard. This GRS 4.0 and RCS 2.0 revision process will now be rolled this transition.

Are Textile Exchange standards recognized globally?

Yes, all our standards apply globally. You can use our logos worldwide as long as you meet the requirements for logo use and claims.

Do you have translations of your standards available in other languages?

Visit the Document Library to see all standards documents. For some, translations are available.

What are the main differences between the GRS and the RCS?

The RCS and GRS are the same, except that the GRS is a more rigorous standard. In the GRS, there is a higher minimum content percentage (50%) and additional processing requirements (social, environmental, and chemical) that have to be met.

In the GRS, it mentions that the minimum content percentage is 20%, but in the Standards Claims Policy, it says the minimum is 50%. What does this mean?

You can use the GRS as a business-to-business tool for any products that contain at least 20% recycled content, but if you want to use consumer-facing labeling, the product must contain at least 50% recycled content.

My company is already certified to the GRS. Does this mean I am also certified to the RCS?

No, the GRS certification does not automatically include RCS certification. However, you can easily add the RCS to your existing certification by contacting your certification body. Typically, another audit is not necessary because the requirements of the RCS are covered by GRS as well. The best option is to request certification to the GRS and RCS at the same time.

What is the Global Recycled Standard (GRS)?

The Global Recycled Standard (GRS) is a full product standard to verify and track recycled raw materials through the supply chain. It also includes processing criteria to prevent the use of potentially hazardous chemicals, and verifies positive social or environmental production at the facilities. The GRS uses the chain of custody requirements of the Content Claim Standard (CCS).

Sharpening

GRS sharpening systems are the ultimate in accuracy, efficiency, and repeatability.

The GraverHone® is a variable speed hone and features high torque from an American-made motor. The GRS Apex® sharpening fixture is a beginner-friendly way to create repeatable results. The Dual Angle fixture is a classic staple in the industry, with the ability to create any graver you wish.

Build My Bench

Compressed air

GRS Air Systems require clean, dry air to power the handpiece.

There are two options for compressed air, the major difference of which are the audible levels. (The advantage of buying a compressor from GRS is it includes the necessary filters and hook-up kits to get you right to work!)

Build My Bench

workholding

Workholding is responsible for keeping your workpiece in place, free of vibration and movement.

GRS vises are always machined in the USA to provide you with the best, most durable block. Robust bearing systems and precision machining creating smooth rotation and less vibration. There are a variety of size options by weight and height.

Build My Bench

air systems

GRS Air Systems are essential for many engravers, stone setters, and other artists.

By setting the speed on the Air System, the user is able to work at a consistent speed while applying the power they require via the foot throttle or hand control. Air pulses then travel into the handpiece, where a spring, piston, and anvil deliver smooth strikes, transferring impact to the tool in the handpiece.

Build My Bench

Magnification

High-quality optics make detailed work much easier.

GRS offers microscopes and stands, Optivisors, and loupes made for hand engraving and stone setting. The Acrobat® stand was designed specifically for engravers and stone setters. Other stands have been adapted from the electronics industry, but can provide a suitable option for holding the microscope.

Build My Bench

Work surface

A sturdy work surface is very helpful for ergonomics and stability.

The Satellite® System has a turntable built-in and is great for working at most heights. It can be utilized for microscope use or other magnification choices. The block shelves are an economical choice that mounts to the front of the bench.

Build My Bench

handpieces

Air travels into the handpiece, delivering smooth strikes to the cutting tool.

Handpieces are constructed out of high-quality stainless steel. They are very simple mechanisms with a spring, piston, and anvil. This makes for easy cleaning and maximized performance. Standard-style handpieces are operated by the foot throttle and are compatible with the GraverMax® or GraverSmith®. The Airtact or “AT”-style handpieces only work with the GraverMach® AT system and offer the option to be operated by the foot throttle or hand control.

Build My Bench

gravers

Having the proper graver (cutting tool) for the job is vital to the success of hand engraving or stone setting.

GRS gravers are available in a variety of alloys to fit your projects. We also offer a wide variety of graver shapes. To help cut down on the overwhelming number of options, we have put together some simple kits to help you get started cutting.

Toyota Hilux and Fortuner get the GR-S badge – here’s everything you need to know

Euden Valdez - Philstar.comJanuary 24, 2022 | 10:00am

A sense of adventure and race-like driving is what Filipinos can expect at the latest GR-S models to be made available in the country—reinventions of the highly popular Fortuner and Hilux. Photo Release

MANILA, Philippines — Most-trusted and well-afforded by countless Filipinos, Toyota cars are mainstays on Philippine roads. Almost anyone—whether a Toyota owner or not, a motorist or a commuter—is familiar with the iconic carmaker and its models.

However, not everyone will be able to recognize the GR-S badge on a Toyota car, more so what it means.

A Toyota car bearing the GR-S badge means it is developed by Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR), which is the company’s motorsports division. Carrying Toyota’s racing DNA, GR-S models appeal to those who love racing and to those who search for adventure.

This sense of adventure and race-like driving is what Filipinos can expect at the latest GR-S models to be made available in the country—reinventions of the highly popular Fortuner and Hilux.

Here’s everything you need to know about the newly launched Fortuner GR-S and Hilux GR-S models:

1. Toyota’s philosophy of making ever-better cars

The term gazoo is derived from the word gazo, which means “photo.” It was first used in Gazoo.com, a website in Japan that gathered images of available vehicles from many dealerships. Today, gazoo has taken a modern meaning in “garage.” It refers to a place where people work together to improve or repair a car with the end goal of delivering a great service.

This is the heritage of Toyota Gazoo Racing, which was chosen by Toyota in 2015 to unify all its motorsport activities. Its philosophy is to make ever-better by racing even in the toughest conditions.

RELATED: Beyond motorsports, Toyota Gazoo Racing continues to push the limits for better cars

In the Philippines, the first-ever Gazoo Racing model to arrive is the Toyota GR Supra in 2019, followed by the Vios GR-S and GR Yaris.

Now, Filipino fans of Toyota can set their sights on the Fortuner GR-S and Hilux GR-S, the fourth and fifth additions to the growing GR-S lineup in the country.

2. The experience of motorsports in daily lives

The Fortuner GR-S and Hilux GR-S were officially launched in October last year during the second leg of the TGR Vios Cup held at Clark International Speedway in Pampanga.

The move is aimed to reintroduce and amplify the Gazoo Racing brand to Filipinos with the help of Toyota’s top selling IMV (Innovative International Multi-purpose Vehicle) models.

As bearers of the GR-S badge, Fortuner and Hilux are enhanced with Toyota’s racing DNA, and are developed with simulations and experiments under extreme racing conditions.

The result is ever-better models that will make race-like driving available to anyone, anywhere, in any class.

3. Boasts striking, sportier looks

The Fortuner GR-S and Hilux GR-S present heart-racing upgrades for the SUV and pickup that we know. Beginning with striking sportier looks, these upgrades will make heads turn on the road.

First is the Fortuner GR-S with more aggressive front and rear bumpers complemented with a fog lamp garnish, a back door garnish and a bi-tone rear spoiler. The new exterior also comes with a body color arch mould to accentuate its sportier build.

Already an imposing pickup, Toyota’s Hilux becomes even more intimidating with the GR-S aesthetic. The Hilux GR-S gets a gloss black G-MESH front grille design. This comes with the Toyota emblem across the front, compared to the Toyota logo on the Hilux.

Other exterior updates include body color overfenders and sports bar in gloss black.

The newest GR-S models also get black-tinted clear coating on its 18-inch alloy wheels with machine-cut finish.

4. Race-ready interiors to fire up your racing spirit

Entering the Fortuner GR-S and Hilux GR-S will surely make drivers and passengers feel race-ready.

To complement their sporty exteriors, both models come in red, black and smoke silver metallic accented interiors. The steering wheel dons leather material with red stitching, while the pedals are made of aluminum. The sport-type front seats are finished in suede and leather material with red stitching.

For the Fortuner GR-S, Matte Carbon trims on the center cluster is added.

5. Provides utmost safety and comfort

Beyond the racing-inspired redesign on exteriors and interiors, Toyota Gazoo Racing also guarantees safety, comfort, and convenience in its models.

Both Fortuner GR-S and Hilux GR-S feature an 8-Way Power Adjust seats that allows easy adjustment of seat position, according to driver's preference.

The Hilux GR-S is also built with paddle shifters that give gear shifting a sportier, manual feel.

For a more stable ride and race-like steering feel the SUV and pickup both get new front GR brake calipers, which also gives a unique and sportier look.

For added safety and security, the panoramic view monitors allows 360 view of both vehicle's surroundings.

The Fortuner GR-S carries the Toyota Safety Sense feature with Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Monitor, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert, which are also found in LTD and Q variants.

6. Built for the adventurous

Given all this, TMP is confident that the Fortuner GR-S and Hilux GR-S will be loved by Filipino motorists just as they do for the original SUV and pickup. One doesn’t have to be a racing enthusiast or a motorsports fan to appreciate the GR-S badge. One just know how to love adventure.

Out with all the teasers and the speculations: Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) has now launched the Fortuner GR-S. And this time, it’s official.

The jazzed-up midsize SUV looks exactly as advertised, sporting new bumpers on both front and rear ends. Additional garnish on the foglamp housings and the liftgate can also be found on the outside. Capping off the GR-inspired look are the blacked-out 18-inch alloy wheels.

No red color options for this one, though, as the Fortuner GR-S can only be had in a two-tone finish with a White Pearl body and an Attitude Black Mica roof.

Inside, the vehicle is fitted with sport-type front seats wrapped in a mix of suede and leather and with eight-way power adjustability. Contrast red stitching can be found here as well as on the steering wheel. Aluminum pedals, matte-carbon trim, dual-zone climate controls, and a plethora of Gazoo Racing badges are also available.

The engine was left untouched, so this here is still powered by a 2.8-liter turbodiesel that churns out 201hp and 500Nm of torque. That said, the SUV has been given some mechanical upgrades courtesy of the new monotube type suspension and front and rear GR brake calipers.

The Fortuner GR-S also gets the safety features and amenities found on the LTD and Q  variants. This includes the Toyota Safety Sense package with a pre-collision system, lane-departure alert, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

As we were anticipating, the Fortuner GR-S arrives with a P2,509,000 price tag and lands right atop the stable, slotting higher than the former top-dog LTD variant. What’s your take on this one?
