Cboe Global Markets is an American company that owns the Chicago Board Options Exchange and the stock exchange operator BATS Global Markets.

History[edit]

Founded in 1973 by the Chicago Board of Trade and member owned for several decades, on March 11, 2010 the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) filed paperwork to launch an initial public offering[2] and began trading on the NASDAQ stock exchange on June 15, 2010.[3]

In September 2011, CBOE Stock Exchange (CBSX) entered into an agreement to acquire the National Stock Exchange. The acquisition was completed on December 30, 2011 with both exchanges to operate under separate names. The National Stock Exchange continued to be based in Jersey City.[4] The National Stock Exchange ceased trading operations on May 30, 2014. The closure brought the number of active stock exchanges in the United States to 11, as the CBOE Stock Exchange had closed the month prior. Wrote Bloomberg, that left "just one public exchange, Chicago Stock Exchange Inc., that isn't owned by Bats, Nasdaq OMX Group Inc., or IntercontinentalExchange Group Inc."[5]

In June 2015, CBOE announced its acquisition of the LiveVol platform, a market data services provider.[6]

In January 2016, CBOE announced it had purchased a majority stake in Vest Financial, an investment adviser specializing in "options-centric products".[7]

In September 2016, it was announced that CBOE was purchasing BATS Global Markets, effective in early 2017, for approximately US$3.2 billion.[8]

In October 2017, the company rebranded from CBOE Holdings to Cboe Global Markets in a global rebrand.[9]

In June 2021, Cboe announced that it had completed its acquisition of Chi-X Asia Pacific which had operated an alternative market operator and provided innovative market solutions. Through the acquisition, Cboe established a significant presence in the Asia Pacific region for the first time by gaining access to two of the world's largest securities markets in Japan and Australia.[10]

In May 2022, Cboe completed its acquisition of Eris Digital Holdings (ErisX), a US-based digital asset spot market, regulated futures exchange, and regulated clearinghouse.[11][12][13]

Exchanges[edit]

The company operates in North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific, providing platforms for trading options, futures, equities, and foreign exchange.[14][15] It has stock exchanges in the US, Canada, the Netherlands and Australia.[16] Its Canadian operations, Cboe Canada, accounts for 15% of the trading in securities listed in Canada by volume.[17] In Australia, the company operates Cboe Australia, following Cboe's acquisition of Chi-X in Australia and Japan.[18] Its European operations, Cboe Europe, is based in London and Amsterdam.[19] By trading volume, Cboe's stock exchanges are the largest in Europe, second-largest in Canada and third largest in the US.[18]

In addition to its exchanges, Cboe operates clearing houses.[18] These include its European clearing house, Cboe Clear Europe.[20] The company also has a cryptocurrency exchange, Cboe Digital, for exchanging crypto currencies and derivatives. The platform, originally ErisX, was acquired by Cboe in 2021.[21]

The company is headquartered in Chicago, where it operates a trading floor for open outcry trading.[22]

Cboe has two main proprietary index options products, options on the VIX Index, an index that measures expectations for stock market volatility[23] and options on SPX, the Standard & Poor’s 500 index.[14] The company also provides platforms for trading options on other indices, including the Russell 2000 Index.[22]

As of 2023[update], Fredric Tomczyk is the company's CEO and has served as a Cboe board member since 2019.[23]

What Is the CBOE Options Exchange?

Founded in 1973, the CBOE Options Exchange is the world's largest options exchange with contracts focusing on individual equities, indexes, and interest rates.

Originally known as the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE), the exchange changed its name in 2017 as part of a rebranding effort by its holding company, CBOE Global Markets. Traders refer to the exchange as the CBOE ("see-bo"). CBOE is also the originator of the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), the most widely used and recognized proxy for market volatility.

Key Takeaways

The CBOE is an important options exchange based in Chicago, founded in 1973.The CBOE Options Exchange was previously the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE).In 2010 the exchange incorporated as a holding company with the exchange as its main asset. In 2017 the holding company and exchange rebranded as CBOE Global Markets Inc. and the CBOE Options Exchange, respectively.CBOE is home to the VIX volatility index and many other volatility instruments.

Understanding the CBOE Options Exchange

CBOE offers trading across multiple asset classes and geographies, including options, futures, U.S. and European equities, exchange-traded products (ETPs), global foreign exchange(FX), and multi-asset volatility products. It is the largest options exchange in the U.S. and the largest stock exchange in Europe, by value traded. It is the second-largest stock exchange operator in the U.S. and a top global market for ETP trading.

The exchange has a rich history, including the creation of the CBOE Clearing Corp., which later became the Options Clearing Corporation (OCC), the industry clearinghouse for all U.S. options trades.

The business of the CBOE goes beyond simple trade executions, and in 1985 it formed The Options Institute, its educational arm, developed to educate investors around the world about options. In addition, the company offers seminars, webinars, and online courses, including learning for professionals.

CBOE Products

The exchange offers access to many diverse products, starting with, of course, put and call options on thousands of publicly traded stocks, as well as on exchange traded funds (ETFs) and exchange traded notes (ETNs). Investors typically use these products for hedging and income production through the selling of covered calls or cash-secured puts.

There are options available on stock and sector indexes, including the Standard & Poor's 500, S&P 100, Dow Jones Industrial Average, Russell indexes, selected FTSE indexes, Nasdaq Indexes, MSCI Indexes, and sector indexes including the 10 sectors contained within the S&P 500.

The exchange offers social media indexes and specialty indexes covering several options strategies, such as "put write," butterfly, and collar.

Finally, the VIX index is the premier barometer of equity market volatility. This Index is based on real-time prices of near-the-money options on the S&P 500 Index (SPX) and is designed to reflect investors' consensus view of future (30-day) expected stock market volatility. Traders call the VIX Index the "fear gauge" because it tends to spike to very high levels when investors believe the market is very bearish or unstable.

The VIX Index is also the flagship index of the CBOE Global Markets' volatility franchise. This includes volatility indexes on broad-based stock indexes, ETFs, individual stocks, commodities, and other specialty indexes.

The CBOE created the VIX Index in 1993. It has since become the de facto barometer of U.S. equity market volatility.

How Many Options Contracts Trade on the CBOE?

In Q1 2022, total volume across CBOE's options exchanges reached 830.3 million options contracts, a record amount. Quarterly average daily volume (ADV) also reached a new all-time high of 13.4 million contracts traded per day.

When Were Put Options First Listed on the CBOE?

When the CBOE launched in 1973, it only listed call options. It was not until 1977 that the exchange added put options as well.

When Were LEAP Options First Listed on the CBOE?

LEAPs (Long-Term AnticiPation Securities) are long-dated options listed on exchanges, with expirations longer than one year and up to three or more years. The CBOE first introduced listed LEAP trading in 1990.

Entrepreneur, mayor, philanthropist and author... It’s not every day that you host a legend like Mike Bloomberg whose vision and innovations in business, government and philanthropy have had a profound impact on the world. Thanks for ringing the Cboe closing bell!
